The First Publication on Cell-Based Seafood

Putting cellular aquaculture β€œon the map” in scientific literature.

2018 - 2019

Cellular agriculture can be applied to seafood production to reduce our dependence on commercial fishing, which threatens the health of oceans and marine life. Why, then, is seafood so underexplored compared to land-based meat?

Prior to this initiative, no public literature explored marine applications of cellular agriculture. We consolidated all of the technical reasons why seafood is uniquely suited for cell culture into a peer-reviewed paper, Cell-Based Fish: A Novel Approach to Seafood Production and an Opportunity for Cellular Agriculture to spark further research on cell-based seafood.

CELL-BASED SEAFOOD

Outcomes

The project team publishes a peer-reviewed publication outlining why seafood is uniquely suited to cell culture and what research can most rapidly advance the field.

CELL-BASED SEAFOOD

Progress Timeline

May 2018 - New Harvest decides to write a paper about cell-based seafood with support from an anonymous donor. From the beginning, we commit to publishing open access in order to maximize impact and public understanding about cellular aquaculture.

Nov 2018 - The preprint publication is published online.

Jun 2019 – The peer-reviewed publication is published open access in Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems.

CELL-BASED SEAFOOD

Collaborators

The publication was authored by Natalie Rubio, Isha Datar, David Stachura, David Kaplan, and Kate Krueger.
