The Open Image Library
An open-source library of clear, engaging, and science-based illustrations and images to help the cellular agriculture community communicate more effectively.

CALL TO ACTION
Visuals have a powerful impact on how the public understands cellular agriculture—and misleading images can harm the field.
Early coverage often featured either overly appetizing photos of conventional meat or disturbing, science-fiction-like imagery, neither of which reflected the reality of cellular agriculture.
While recent prototype images from startups are an improvement, they often lack transparency and serve promotional, rather than educational, purposes.
To support the field’s growth and public understanding, we must adopt visual tools that are accurate, approachable, and emphasize process over product.
That’s why New Harvest is encouraging the community to use and share a new open-source library of illustrations and images that accurately represent cellular agriculture.
THE OPEN IMAGE LIBRARY
Overview
Since 2015, New Harvest has led efforts to develop a clear, constructive visual language for cellular agriculture. We first commissioned illustrator Nick Counter to create diagrams that emphasized process and speculation over polished product imagery. These visuals were widely adopted, influencing how the field has been represented ever since.
Building on that foundation, New Harvest has now released a new set of open-source illustrations as part of a recently announced textbook project. These include both complete diagrams and individual components, enabling researchers, educators, and advocates to create their own accurate visuals.
