The New Harvest Research Grants Program

A series of catalytic grant-making efforts to emerging technical leaders to build the academic foundations of cellular agriculture.

2015 - Ongoing

Through our catalytic grant-making programs, New Harvest planted the seeds for cellular agriculture as a field.

Prior to 2015, “cellular agriculture” did not exist as a term, and it fell in a funding gap: it required expertise from medicine for applications within agriculture.

Our thesis was simple: If New Harvest takes the leap and funds cellular agriculture research, then we can have a community of researchers with data and expertise to win big time government grants.

There were dozens of researchers around the world keen to do this work; however they did not have access to the initial funding needed to get their work off the ground.

New Harvest alumni have co-founded companies, won government grants, and mentored dozens of students. They comprise the cellular agriculture vanguard.

FOUNDATIONAL RESEARCH COMMUNITY

Overview

Since 2015, New Harvest has been funding forward-thinking early-career scientists in cellular agriculture.

When we started the New Harvest Fellowship, it was the only training opportunity for students interested in cellular agriculture. The fellowship provided dedicated research funding, an international support system, and leadership opportunities. Beyond just research funding, the overarching goal is to empower future technical leaders in the field.

Following on the success of the fellowship program, New Harvest has continued to iterate on new and impactful ways of funding emerging leaders in cellular agriculture.

Open Sourcing the Fellowship

When we started the New Harvest Fellowship, nothing like it existed in this field. Training opportunities for students interested in cellular agriculture were nearly nonexistent.

Recently, we’ve been increasingly approached by other funders looking to provide training opportunities in cell ag and other fields. In the spirit of open sharing, we’ve made these resources open for anyone! These documents cover our approach, the application process, and the nitty-gritty details of how it runs. We hope these resources help other organizations interested in funding early-stage researchers in novel fields get grant programs off the ground!
