Why Cellular Agriculture?

Our global herd of farmed animals is one of the biggest drivers and victims of climate change.

And it’s no secret: our growing dependence on animal agriculture continues to erode biodiversity, monopolize arable land, and incubate zoonotic diseases.

It doesn't have to be this way.

A MISSION-DRIVEN TECHNOLOGY

Cellular agriculture offers a chance to diversify food production to create a food secure future.

We dedicate more of this Earth to feeding cows, pigs, and chickens than we do to anything else. About a third of this planet, roughly equivalent to all of North and South America combined, is dedicated to raising livestock.

While the figures can be calculated in multiple ways, livestock production contributes 12-17% of of global greenhouse gas emissions.

With the growing demand for animal products, maintaining the status quo has tremendous consequences for animal suffering, food security, biosecurity, and more.

Cellular agriculture - the production of foods from cells - is one of the few interventions that offer a climate solution without requiring behavioural change.

Just like wind and solar for the energy sector, and other mission-driven technologies - cellular agriculture needs sustained public investment in research, innovation, safety and regulatory work before the private sector can successfully develop market-ready products.

Unlike other mission-driven technologies, global public support for cellular agriculture is disproportionately neglected by both governments and philanthropists.

New Harvest is the stake in the ground for a world-changing idea.

Since 2003, we have build the field of cellular agriculture through groundbreaking research and collaborative projects.

Our ultimate aim? Cellular Agriculture for the Public Good.
